Spring into Holland

See the colour of Holland in Spring

This tour has been designed for those with limited time available or who prefer not to drive long distances. It is centered at an excellent campsite on the coast which is just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Katwijk aan Zee, one of the Netherland’s best-known seaside resorts. The site is well-served by public transport and you could take advantage of the free time to visit the Hague, seat of government and home to the International Court of Justice, or, perhaps, the old university city of Leiden, Rembrandt’s birthplace. Both cities are about a 30 minute bus ride away.

Amsterdam is a 30 minute train journey from Leiden Central Station. However, the trip does include an excursion to the Netherland’s capital city where we will take a cruise through the Canal District, one of the best ways to see the city, especially if it is for the first time.

Of course we couldn’t be in Holland in early May without visiting the Keukenhof gardens, the largest Spring garden in the world; 7 million flower bulbs, mostly daffodils, hyacinths and tulips, are planted every year. There are also seven special show gardens, each reflecting the latest trends in horticulture. You will be free to wander through the 79 acre site at your own pace and, perhaps, pick up some inspiration for your own garden.

There is also a full-day excursion to Delft, home to the distinctive blue-and-white porcelain. We will have a guided tour of the pottery which produced the first ‘Delft Blue’ in 1653. There will be an opportunity to visit the historic centre of the city with its rows of gabled houses, almshouses and the Prinsenhof, former residence of the Princes of Orange. Here, between the City Hall and Nieuwe Kerk, you will find up to 150 stalls selling cheese and other foods, antiques, books and bric-a-brac, and just five minutes walk away on the Brabantse Turfmarkt is the colourful flower market with dozens of flower merchants and thousands of flowers for sale.

Please note that no pets are allowed on this tour due to restrictions at the campsite
