Superb scenery and simply stunning driving
Enjoy breath taking scenery as we travel through the very best of the Austrian Alps including driving the stunning Grossglockner High Alpine road, a purpose-built Alpine pass with a series of museums for visiting along the way.
As well as exploring the Alpine scenery, we have a tour underground of the world’s oldest (around 7,000 years) active salt mine, and visit Krimml Waterfall (at 380m high Europe’s largest). Enjoy stays with guided visits in two of Austria’s best cities – Innsbruck and Salzburg. And along the way seven quality group meals are included.
The tour can be completed off motorway if desired, so there is no necessity for a ‘Go Box’ or ‘Vignette’ motorway pass. Throughout the tour there are many stunning drives, all very suitable for motorhomes as they are used by full sized coaches, however, at times a confident driving approach will be required.
Day One – Tuesday 18th June
We meet at our conveniently located campsite near to Innsbruck, where our pitches have views to the Austrian Alps. This evening the Tour Directors host a welcome drinks reception at their motorhome followed by a group dinner in the campsite’s own restaurant.
Day Two – Wednesday 19th June
An excursion today, we have a full day in Innsbruck with a guided tour of the city centre. Lunch is included in a traditional Austrian city restaurant.
Day Three – Thursday 20th June
A free day to explore the very rural setting all around, or just take it easy and relax at our well-appointed campsite.
Day Four – Friday 21st June
Move on to our next campsite in the centre of the Stubaital Valley. Whilst the drive is only short, keeping off the motorways we enjoy stunning scenery. 22 miles
Day Five – Saturday 22nd June
Today we take the Stubai Glacier cable car as high as possible, maybe we can reach the ‘Top of the Tirol’ where at 3210m the views are both stunning and far reaching. There will be plenty of time for you to take in the experience and to have a coffee in one of the mountain huts/restaurants.
Day Six – Sunday 23rd June
A free day. Our campsite is situated in the centre of Neustift village with its shops and restaurants within a few minutes walk. There are also endless opportunities for both mountain walks and cycling, alternatively just relax and enjoy the marvellous scenery all around you, certainly you will not be bored. This evening we stroll to a nearby restaurant for a traditional Alpine group dinner.
Day Seven – Monday 24th June
Today we temporarily pass into Italy as we travel across its most northern road to arrive at our next Austrian campsite, near to the start of the Grossglockner High Alpine Route. With a relatively short drive why not stop for an Italian ice-cream on route. 135 Miles
Day Eight – Tuesday 25th June
A free day. We are now within the Grossglockner National Park and the Alpine village of Heiligenblut is walkable from our campsite.
Day Nine – Wednesday 26th June
Today we drive the wonderful Grossglockner High Alpine Route. Built in the 1930’s this is for many people simply the best driving experience in Europe. At just 30 miles, it is not so long, but allow all day to pass as it is so much more than just a road. The whole area is a national park and along the way are 12 museums to visit covering the history of building the road, to the efforts required for clearing the snow to open the road on the 1st May each year, to the wildlife and nature that survive and live at this altitude. Having crossed the Grossglockner, we arrive at Zell am See and our campsite right on the lake, where we have dinner in the campsite’s own restaurant this evening. 35 miles. Note the Grossglockner National Park is a toll road and this is payable locally at around €40.
Days Ten and Eleven – Thursday 27th and Friday 28th June
Free days. Our Zell am See campsite is in a great location both for scenery and convenience. From the campsites own jetty lake cruisers can be taken for a tour of the lake or as transport to the city. Alternatively, it’s a pleasant 2km lakeside walk to the city centre.
Day Twelve – Saturday 29th June
A short drive this morning to Krimml, home of Europe’s largest waterfall. Dispensing up to 50 cubic metres of water per second from a height of 380m it’s a powerful sight to be seen. We include entrance to the waterfalls, from where there are a number of walking options to gain higher views, or just marvel at the amount of water falling at the bottom. This evening, in the village fountain park take the opportunity to view the ‘sonne et lumiere’, which is just a couple of minutes walk from our hotel overnight parking. 35 miles
Day Thirteen – Sunday 30th June
This morning we have a leisurely start to the day and are treated to breakfast in the hotel. Later we travel the scenic route through the world famous Kitzbuhel ski region to arrive in Salzburg. 90 miles
Day Fourteen – Monday 1st July
We have a full day in Salzburg where our English speaking guide will help us get to know this city of music. Mozart spent most of his time here and Salzburg is the centre of the ‘Sound of Music’. However, there is a lot more to Salzburg than just music, as you’ll discover. Lunch is included today in a city restaurant.
Day Fifteen – Tuesday 2nd July
We travel to Hallstatt, where we find the houses are all built of wood including the roofs. They stem back to the days when the town housed only salt mine workers, today the whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a unique location to see. With a short journey and our campsite wonderfully positioned right in town you’ll have time to explore this fascinating place throughout the afternoon. 50 miles
Day Sixteen – Wednesday 3rd July
Today we take the funicular railway to a high point, for a magnificent view over-looking the Alpine Lake of Hallstatter See. We then have the opportunity to visit the original and still producing Hallstatt Salt Mine, dating back over 7,000 years this is the oldest active mine in the world. Not only is it a wonderful experience it is also educational, covering the history of the mine and the important role salt has played over the years. Note: this visit may not be possible for people with restricted mobility.
This evening we have our farewell dinner in a picturesque area of the old town, in one of Hallstatt best restaurants; it’s an opportunity to enjoy good food whilst looking back at the many great places we have visited.
Day Seventeen – Thursday 4th July
This morning our tour comes to an end.
